A 69-year old grandmother has become the latest DJ to take the club scene by storm. DJ Ruth Flowers began DJing after being inspired by the music and dancing at her grandson’s party.

“There was an awful lot of energy and joy, and real enjoyment of the music and the dancing. And I thought, ‘I like this.’ I love to see the kids enjoying themselves. And so I thought, you know, I said to myself, ‘I can do that.’”

Although she admits she’s not yet perfected the art of spinning, she’s playing at the hottest nightclubs in Paris. And she’s developed an ear for what works and doesn’t work in her music, which she describes as “a little bit glammy” and “a little bit perhaps over the top”.

Of her fellow DJs and her personal taste she says, “Technically they’re more experienced than I am, so I’m guided by them but I like to throw in my words of wisdom sometimes. If I don’t like a thing, I can say. If I like it I say ‘thats OK, we’ll leave it in’.”
